Shorebird Migration Walk
Saturday, August 30, 2025
8:00 AM – 12:00 NOON
Description: August and September bring the southward migration of shorebirds to our coast. In addition to the common Western and Least Sandpiper, Sanderling, and Black Turnstone, we might find Long-billed Curlew, Marbled Godwit, Red Knot, and Baird’s Sandpiper. Other likely birds include Snowy Plover, Semi-palmated Plover, and a variety of off-shore birds such as cormorants, grebes, and pelicans.
We’ll meet at 8:00 A.M. at the Ward Avenue parking area next to the beach. From there, we’ll scan and scope from the north end of the old haul road blacktop, then head down to the beach on an uneven sandy/rocky trail. We’ll walk about 2 miles north and should return to the cars around noon.
Accessibility: Not ADA accessible. This walk will be partly on uneven trails and mainly on sand; sturdy shoes are recommended.
